Masks to be compulsory until virus 'permanently' defeated

Wearing face masks will be compulsory in Spain until the coronavirus epidemic is defeated once and for all, Health Minister Salvador Illa said on Tuesday.

Illa said the measure would remain in force after the state of emergency ends on June 21st and will "remain in place until we permanently defeat the virus, which is when we have an effective treatment or vaccine against it".

The Spanish Health Minister's comments come just days after Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez told journalists that everyone in Spain over the age of six will have to wear face masks in public places "as long as it is not possible to maintain the safety distance” of 1.5 to 2 metres. 

Sánchez stated that this would be mandatory after Spain's Phase 3 of the de-escalation plan ends for most of the country on June 21st, but didn't specify for how long after.

(Variety)  -  GoFundMe has suspended conservative political commentator Candace Owens’s fundraiser for an Alabama cafe whose co-owner criticized the George Floyd protests. Owens also came under fire for controversial comments about Floyd while speaking with Glenn Beck.

Owens raised more than $200,000 for Birmingham’s Parkside Cafe, whose co-owner Michael Dykes said Floyd was a “thug” and protesters were “idiots” in a text message to a co-worker that was posted online. Three employees quit working and people online began boycotting the cafe after Dykes’ comments came out.

Owens also came under fire for controversial comments about Floyd, who died after a police officer kneeled on his neck for more than eight minutes.

“The fact that he has been held up as a martyr sickens me. George Floyd was not a good person, I don’t care who wants to spin that. I don’t care how CNN wants to make you think he changed his life around,” she said in an interview with Beck. “He was just after his sixth or fifth stint in prison.”

On Sunday, Owens revealed that her campaign to support Dykes’ cafe was suspended by GoFundMe after the company found her fundraiser “to be in support of hate, violence, harassment, bullying, discrimination, terrorism, or intolerance of any kind.”

Owens lashed out on Twitter in response to GoFundMe’s decision

“Guess my message to little kids would be for them not to idolize men that: Get high on fentanyl, get high on meth, use counterfeit bills, shove guns into the stomaches of pregnant women while robbing them, go to prison 5 times. What a truly horrible message I carry,” she wrote.

CHINA may be planning to genetically-modify its soldiers for an army of Terminator-style super troops, a defence think tank has warned.

Experts at Rusi say GM soldiers could be faster, stronger and cleverer than their battlefield opponents and even feel no pain.

Their DNA could also be adapted to help them recover more quickly from injuries or give them superior hearing and night vision.

Rusi’s Professor John Louth said: “The threat is obvious and real. Chinese money could be stealing a march on western armed forces and that is deeply concerning.”

The warning comes after Chinese scientist He Jiankui said he used gene-editing technology to make GM babies.

“GM technology is proven with plants, it could absolutely be applied to the person,” Prof Louth added.

“In China, it is reasonable to assume that they are enhancing their battlefield soldiers on all these fronts.”

China jailed Dr Jiankui for “illegal medical practices” over his claims to have made three babies immune to HIV.

(Reuters) - Estonia has started to test one of the world's first digital immunity passports, created by a team including founders of global tech startups Transferwise and Bolt, seeking a safer return to workplaces following the coronavirus lockdown.

A digital immunity passport collects testing data and enables people to share their immunity status with a third party, like an employer, using a temporary QR-code generated after digital authentication.

"Digital immunity passport aims to diminish fears and stimulate societies all over the globe to move on with their lives amidst the pandemic," said Taavet Hinrikus, founder of Transferwise and a member of Back to Work, the non-governmental organisation developing the passport.

Many countries and businesses are rushing to develop apps for contact-tracing.
